EXAM PREP
Mastering TOEFL Listening
A minimalist guide to the core strategies
Phase I: Quick Response
Strategy A: Identify Function
Determine the intent before answering. Ask yourself: Is the speaker suggesting, complaining, or requesting?
Strategy B: Locate Focal Points
Focus on the core keywords. Beware of "distractors" -> words that sound familiar but lead to incorrect logic.
Phase II: Complex Passages
For Conversations, Announcements, and Lectures, apply the Three Pillars:
- Question Type: Are you looking for the Gist (main idea), a Detail (fact), or a Stance (attitude)?
- Answer Type: Predict if the answer will be a summary, a paraphrase, or a logical conclusion.
- Location: Listen for the Gist at the start, Details in the middle, and the Stance at the end.
Golden Rules
- Elimination: Removing the wrong answer is as effective as finding the right one.
- Paraphrasing: The correct answer usually uses synonyms, not the exact words from the audio.
- Logic First: Don't overthink. Choose the most direct logical consequence of what you heard.
